What color house goes with your roof? The quick chart

A black, charcoal or gray roof is most often paired with white or light gray walls. Under a brown or red roof the usual advice is a warm light color such as beige, sand or magnolia (a creamy off-white). These are rules of thumb, not hard rules.

The chart sums up three European sources: Dulux’s Polish color guide, the stucco maker Baumit and the Polish magazine Murator.

RoofCommonly recommended wall colorsBe careful with
Black, charcoal, graywhite and light grays (Dulux Poland); for gray roofs also light pastels and wood (Murator)very dark walls over foam insulation
Brownwhite as the classic, sand, beige (Murator); beige, magnolia (Dulux Poland)orange (Murator)
Red, terracottabeige, magnolia (Dulux Poland); beige (Baumit)red brick walls (Murator)
Greenlight grays and white (Dulux Poland); warm beige, yellowish shades or white (Murator)none noted

Four working rules:

  1. Roof first. Roofing comes in a limited range of colors (Dulux Poland).
  2. Warm with warm, cool with cool. A designers’ rule of thumb: brown and red are warm, black and gray cool.
  3. Two or three colors on the walls: a light main color, darker ones for details (Baumit).
  4. Before you order, check who can say no and test a real sample.

Every picture shows the same house: a European stucco house with a tile roof. The logic carries over to siding and shingles. Our dark roof is charcoal, between mid-gray and jet black. Try the same test on a photo of your own house.

Should your roof be darker or lighter than your house?

None of the sources we checked gives a rule. Every row of the chart puts a darker roof over lighter walls; for darker walls, see the last picture in this guide.

What color house goes with a black or gray roof?

The standard advice for a black, charcoal or gray roof is white or light gray walls. Dulux’s Polish color guide groups blacks and grays with light grays and white. For gray and graphite roofs, the Polish building magazine Murator calls white or light gray stucco the default and adds light pastels, from beige to blue, and wood.

A 2025 Murator article goes further: walls in the full range of colors, from white to brown, suit a graphite-gray roof. Baumit suggests gray walls under black tiles. Before choosing dark walls, check the color’s light reflectance value (LRV).

House colors with a black roof and white windows or white trim

The fourth picture swaps the dark gray window frames for white ones and the white walls for cream. With white windows or trim, start from the chart’s wall colors; by our count (roof, walls, window frames) white frames are already the third color. See the trim method below.

What about a light gray roof?

A light gray roof is in the same cool family, so start from white and light gray walls; the sources give no separate advice by lightness.

On your own photo: in zabudowa.arch, our Android app (how it works), choose “Facade color” and tap “Soft grey.” The roof stays as it is.

What colors go with a brown roof?

White is the classic partner for a brown roof, followed by sand, beige, pale yellows and pastels. That is the advice of the Polish building magazine Murator, which also urges caution with orange. Dulux’s Polish guide pairs browns with other warm shades such as beige and magnolia. Treat all of it as a rule of thumb.

Brown is a range: light, dark, reddish. The sources give no separate rule for each shade, though Baumit says beige flatters dark brown tiles. Our suggestion (a method, not a rule): decide whether your roof leans red or gray, then compare a white and a beige against it.

House colors with a brown roof and white trim

The picture below shows the same beige wall with white window frames. White trim is a third color by our count, so start from the chart’s brown row and compare two colors on your own photo.

On your own photo: choose “Facade color” and tap “Sand beige” or “Warm white plaster.” Changing the window frames too? Add “Doors & windows.”

What color house goes with a red roof?

Warm neutrals such as beige and magnolia are the usual answer for a red roof. Dulux’s Polish guide pairs reds with warm shades, and the stucco maker Baumit says beige flatters brick-red tiles. The one pairing the Polish building magazine Murator warns against is a red brick wall under a red tile roof.

White under a red roof is shown below so you can judge for yourself. Light gray under red is a deliberate contrast: we found no source for or against it, so test it on a photo. Red clay tile and red metal are different reds, but the sources do not separate them.

On your own photo: choose “Facade color” and tap “Sand beige.” Choosing the roof instead? Pick “Roof” and try “Terracotta clay tiles.”

Green, metal and terracotta roofs, brick and stone: quick answers

For a green roof the sources differ. For the other roofs here we found no separate advice, so the table points to the nearest chart row.

Roof or fixed materialStart from
Green rooflight grays and white (Dulux Poland); warm beige, yellowish shades or white (Murator)
Reddish brown, copper, terracottawhite, beige, sand: the brown and red advice
Metal roofthe chart row that matches its color
Brick or stone wallspaint that suits their warm or cool cast (our own method)

Brick and stone are fixed colors, like the roof: decide whether they read warm or cool, then choose the paint around them. We found no reliable pairing list for brick beyond Murator’s caution about red brick under a red tile roof.

White trim, black trim and black windows: the third color

Trim and window frames are the third color after the roof and the walls. The sources we checked give no rule for light versus dark trim, so here is a method.

  • Keep the walls to two or three paint colors (Baumit); counting the roof and window frames too is our own, stricter reading.
  • Use one color for all window frames, trim and details.
  • Compare instead of guessing: two pictures above show white window frames (cream under charcoal, beige under brown); the others keep dark gray frames, close to the black-windows look.

In zabudowa.arch the “Doors & windows” option suggests “White window frames” and “Black window frames,” so you can see each on your photo.

How can I see what my house would look like in a different color?

Three ways: a paint brand’s visualizer, a photo app or a real sample on the wall. The chart gives the direction; your own house gives the answer.

Can I upload a picture of my house and try paint colors?

Yes. The HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Color Visualizer takes your own photos, interior and exterior. Visualize Color from PPG Paints works in four steps: select a photo, select colors, visualize, order paint (both checked on October 13, 2026).

Is there an app to see paint colors on your house?

Yes, on Android: zabudowa.arch, our own app (an iOS version is planned). On Google Play it is listed as “AI Interior Design: Room Ideas”; House mode, the part for exteriors, has been in the same app since version 1.1 (October 2026).

  1. Photograph your house from the street or the yard: in daylight, sun behind you, phone straight, the whole building in the shot, no people.
  2. Pick what to change, up to two things. Roof already there or ordered? Pick “Facade color” and the roof stays. Choosing a roof for existing walls? Pick “Roof.”
  3. Tap a suggestion such as “Warm white plaster,” or describe the color in your own words.
  4. Designs A, B and C arrive in about a minute. Compare them with the before/after slider, then save or share.

The building’s shape, the roof shape and pitch, and every window and door opening stay where they are. You can create designs for free within a daily and a monthly limit, and a run that fails doesn’t count, so narrow your choice to two or three colors first. No email, no password, no sign-up. Photos and designs are deleted after 24 hours. More about your data: privacy policy (in Polish).

Still building? Photograph the shell

Once the walls and roof are up, photograph the shell and you get three designs of the finished exterior.

What a preview can’t tell you

The app’s preview gives you no paint-brand color code, no LRV check and no check of HOA, historic-district or zoning rules. As our own disclaimer puts it: “Designs are AI-generated images for inspiration. Colors, materials and products can look different in real life, so check a sample before you paint or buy.”

Get zabudowa.arch on Google Play, or see more examples on the free AI exterior design app page. The same app redesigns rooms.

Can I change the exterior color of my house? HOA, historic and planning rules

Usually yes, but three things can limit your choice: a homeowners’ association, a local historic district and, in some countries, the zoning plan.

United States. There is no national rule. The National Park Service says National Register listing “places no restrictions on what a non-federal owner may do with their property,” unless federal assistance is involved. Local historic districts can restrict color. In New York City’s historic districts and on its landmarks you may “repaint a building exterior to match the existing color” without a permit, but the Landmarks Preservation Commission adds: “Changing colors does require a permit.” Homeowners’ associations can restrict color too, to the extent their recorded documents say so. In Florida, for example, § 720.3035 requires that authority to be stated in or reasonably inferred from the declaration or its guidelines. Read your HOA declaration and design guidelines, and call your city’s preservation office.

England. Painting the outside of a house is normally permitted development: no planning application is needed. The General Permitted Development Order 2015 (Schedule 2, Part 2, Class C) permits “the painting of the exterior of any building or work.” Two exceptions matter: a listed building needs consent for works that affect its character, and a council can withdraw the right in a defined area with an Article 4 direction. Some directions even name the color: in one Brighton & Hove area walls must be “painted in Magnolia (BS 4800 08 B15).” We checked England only.

Poland. A local zoning plan can set facade colors and roofing. One plan (Wyszków, 2024) allows roofs only in brown, red, graphite or black and limits stucco to low-saturation white, yellow, gray and beige by NCS code, with black facades banned. More in our guide to zoning conditions in Poland. Our plot analysis tool (interface in Polish) shows whether a plot has a plan; the color clause is in the plan’s text.

Before you order: test a real sample, and check LRV before going dark

Test a large real sample on the wall before you order, and check the LRV before going dark on a foam-insulated wall.

The sample. A small chip misleads in both directions. Farrow & Ball notes that exterior colors, seen in full daylight, can look “lighter and brighter than you might expect.” Two Polish stucco makers describe the opposite effect of size: on a large wall a color reads stronger and darker than on a chip (Greinplast), or at least a little darker (Kreisel). So paint a large board, stand it upright against the house and look at it in sun and shade, morning and afternoon.

LRV. Light reflectance value shows how much visible light a color reflects, from 0 for black to 100 for white (Sto Corp). It matters on EIFS (exterior insulation and finish systems, often called synthetic stucco) and other finish coats over foam insulation, where manufacturers recommend an LRV of 20 or higher (Sto Corp, Sika). Europe’s roughly comparable HBW scale has the same default.

So which color is not recommended for exterior use? A very dark one over foam insulation, unless your system’s data sheet allows it. That is a manufacturers’ guideline, not a law. We did not check siding or brick: ask the maker first.

Rendered walls (UK, Ireland, Australia): what colour to render your house

The same pairing logic applies to render, the stucco of our sample house. In England, rendering or cladding a house in a conservation area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or the Broads needs planning permission (Planning Portal).

Frequently asked questions

What color house goes with a black roof?

White or light gray walls are the standard advice for a black roof: Dulux’s Polish color guide pairs blacks and grays with light grays and white, and the stucco maker Baumit suggests gray walls under black tiles. Treat both as rules of thumb.

What color house goes with a gray roof?

A gray roof is in the same cool family as black, so start from white or light gray walls (Dulux’s Polish color guide, the Polish magazine Murator). A 2025 Murator article says walls in the full range of colors, from white to brown, suit a graphite-gray roof: one magazine’s opinion.

What colors go with a brown roof?

White is the classic partner for a brown roof, followed by sand, beige and other pale warm colors (the Polish magazine Murator, Dulux’s Polish guide). Decide whether your brown leans red or gray, and be careful with orange, which Murator singles out.

What color house goes with a red roof?

Warm neutrals are the usual advice for a red roof: Dulux’s Polish color guide names beige and magnolia, and the stucco maker Baumit names beige for brick-red tiles. The pairing the Polish magazine Murator warns against is red brick walls under a red tile roof.

What house colors go with a brown roof and white trim?

Sand or warm beige is a sensible start: the Polish magazine Murator and Dulux’s Polish guide name warm wall colors like these for a brown roof, and they leave white trim as the lightest element. No source we checked gives a trim rule, so compare two on a photo.

Should your roof be darker or lighter than your house?

We found no rule in the sources we checked. Every row of this article’s pairing chart puts a darker roof over lighter walls, and one picture shows dark gray stucco and larch boards under the same roof. Compare both on a photo of your house.

Can I upload a picture of my house and try paint colors?

Yes. Paint-brand visualizers such as HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams and Visualize Color from PPG Paints accept your own photo and apply paint colors to it. Photo apps redraw the picture for you instead. Either way, check a real sample before you buy.

Is there an app to see paint colors on your house?

Yes. Our own Android app, zabudowa.arch, turns a photo of your house into three designs in about a minute. It is free within a daily and a monthly limit, with no sign-up. The building’s shape, roof shape and openings stay where they are. An iOS version is planned.

Can I change the exterior color of my house?

Usually yes. In the US, check your HOA documents and local historic-district rules first. In England, painting is normally permitted development, but a listed building may need consent and an Article 4 direction can remove the right. In Poland, a local zoning plan can set facade and roof colors.

What colour should I render my house?

Pair the render with the roof as you would paint: white or light grey under a dark roof, warm beige under brown or red. On insulated walls keep to LRV 20 or higher unless the system allows darker. In designated areas in England, rendering may need planning permission.
